Family involvement is a critical part of recovery when someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol. If someone you love is suffering, family support can be one of the most important aspects of recovery.
A strong support system can be an essential part, leading to a life of sobriety. Solstice Counseling and Wellness understands the importance of family in treating addiction, which is why we created our Family Counseling program.
Importance of Family in the Treatment Process
According to the National Council on Alcohol & Drug Dependence (NCADD), alcoholism affects the whole family. If you or a loved one is suffering from addiction, spouses, children, siblings, parents and friends are also suffering.
Active addiction can totally disrupt families and cause harmful effects that may last for quite some time. For this reason, family counseling is recommending so that you and your family can heal together.
In some cases, daily family involvement may have only served to contribute to the addiction and you may not even be aware of the dynamics within your family that are making that contribution. Family members may be unwilling to approach the subject of substance abuse in your family, so members ignore the problem until it has gotten significant.
Solstice understands how family dynamics can contribute or may exacerbate addiction issues and are here to help your family through it.
Family Participation During Treatment
Every family is different and at Solstice, we know that your family has its own dynamics, culture and methods for dealing with difficult situations. For this reason,
Solstice arranges family therapy sessions that are designed specifically for your family’s needs.
You may have discovered that your loved one is resisting treatment, claiming they do not have a problem. This is a normal reaction when substance abuse is suspected. If you are the one suffering from substance abuse and realize you need help, you may need to deal with issues within the family that may have led you to abuse drugs or alcohol.
The family dynamic is very powerful, which is why Solstice works with the entire family to address any unhealthy imbalances and provide the communication skills necessary to lead you or your loved one down the path of sobriety.
Recovering Together With Our Family Services and Counseling
Once you or your loved one takes the steps necessary to get treatment for your addiction, family members may feel relief that action is being taken. There is often a sort of “honeymoon” period where everyone seems to be getting along and life will go on without any further problems. As time goes by, however, family members may revert to old, negative behaviors, such as withholding responsibility or not recognizing accomplishments.
You may be concerned that your family member may relapse and that you will have to go through treatment all over again. There begins to be a culture of putting the needs of the person in recovery over the needs of other members of the family.
Through family counseling sessions at Solstice, you and your family can go through the recovery process together, resolving family matters that exist because of addiction as well as those that may have led to addiction. Not only will you learn to cope with a loved one’s addiction, you will be provided emotional support as you work through the addiction process.
You can learn how to recognize if you are enabling your loved one and learn the best strategies to help your loved one cope with their addiction as well as what led them to addiction initially.
